To help increase understanding and awareness of the role and work of the CJTF outside of Kabul, a one day workshop was conducted on October 4 2009 by the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) in Jalalabad City. The event was attended by a number of high ranking officials from Nangarhar, Laghman, Nooristan and Kunar provinces.

The workshop began with Khalilu Rahman Motawakel presenting on the structure and functioning of the CJTF, before Mr. Noor Mohammad Zazi, Head of CJTF Investigation Unit, and Mr. Shafiullah Dawoodi, Director of the CJTF Primary Prosecution, presented an update on the achievements of the CJTF during Islamic year 1387, with particular attention to cases developed from Nangarhar province.
In 1387, of the 442 people arrested for CJTF drug-related offences, 355 were convicted by the CJTF Appeal Court. Those guilty received sentences of up to life imprisonment and fines totaling millions of Afs. In addition, the convictions of 164 drug traffickers have been finalised by Supreme Court of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Dr. M. Alam Ishaqzai, the first Deputy Governor of Nangrahar Province expressed his appreciation of the CJTF on behalf of all the attendees and commented “we see the CJTF’s achievements as a significant step towards a poppy-free Afghanistan and the work of the CJTF helps assure us that involvement in the drugs trade in Afghanistan is an increasingly risky choice”.
His Excellency noted how important the workshop was in catalyzing the exchange of information about Counter-Narcotics work in the province and in educating those working in the area, as well as promising continuing and increasing collaboration with the CJTF.
As a result of the conference a coordination committee consisting key officials of Nangarhar province has been formed to better co-ordinate the work of local officials and the CJTF.
