History and Context

In January 2006, the Government of Afghanistan adopted its current National Drug Control Strategy, with the objective of substantially reducing the cultivation, production, trafficking and consumption of illicit drugs.

A key component of the strategy alongside strengthening rural livelihoods, improving government institutions and creating more drug treatment facilities is to target drug trafficking networks. To this end, the Government of Afghanistan set up the CJTF in May 2005 with the objective of prosecuting serious drug trafficking offences across the country.

The Government of Afghanistan is committed to disrupting the drugs industry across Afghanistan and ensuring there is no safe haven for those who profit from the trade.
